A. How has fatherhood — being a dad — influenced your life?

I work at making sure they surpass me, and don't make many of the mistakes I've made. Also to have them get the benefit of having both parents in the home, and not just one.

B. What 3 tips would you offer a young dad or father-to-be?
Have an education

Have a skill

Be able to stand on your own two feet.

Does being a black father pose any special challenges in the 21st century?
Yes, you have to not be lazy and allow the school be your child sole source of learning. Also you have to teach them their true history which means you have to read yourself. You have to teach them that this world is not fair when it comes to the black race. You have to teach and tell them that Yt isn't really your friend. Oh, and don't buy them toys that perpetuate white superiority. Too many black girls were bought white barbie dolls when there was a black version available. Every toy me kids had was black, or they didn't have it at all.

Peace!

A.

I've become a bit more patient with people, and learned the importance of having a balanced outlook on life. Being a father has also engendered in me a very long-term perspective on my life and the lives of my future descendants.

B.

1. Talk, Read, Teach, and Play with your child. The more a child is positively interacted with, the greater the cognitive ability the child will possess. You want to make sure your child is well prepared long before it starts school.

2. You are always an example, be a good one. Children learn from their parents how adults are suppose to act, interact with each other, and support their children.

3. Knowledge in self and in how the world works is power. Gain that knowledge for yourself and then pass it along to your children. Raising well grounded children requires giving them a strong foundation and understanding of themselves, which you can't give unless you are also well grounded and self-aware.

C.

In my opinion one very important thing a father should make sure is that their children have a strong foundation in reading, writing, and arithmetic in these changing times. A strong understanding of those three with facilitate an easier acquisition of the various skills and knowledge needed to compete in the new global economy. You can't expect the public school systems to give your children a globally competitive education by itself. You have to be deeply involved in their education to ensure they receive the right sort of knowledge and skills to compete.

I hope you get more participation because these are very good questions, and it shows there is no one answer.

I agree, there are things a son and a daughter need from their father. My son needs that male figure, and my daughter needs that security of daddy...even at her age of 16.

Peace!
She will ALWAYS need it. My father passed on. But daily, when I am in a scrap, I ask myself, "What would Daddy say?" And, his wisdom still comes to me, and I follow it. Same with my Mother.
