When I was born and for much of my childhood, in many states, it was illegal for me to vote. Moreover, In all states, there were many neighborhoods I was not allowed to live or walk the street freely. Though there is much work still to do, I have lived to see many of those barriers to freedom come down. It was not done without the blood of successive generations fighting for the rights of others. Freedom aint free.
Today I sit and witness another potential barrier begin to fall. In order for that to happen, we must register and vote en masse. Racism and it's associated oppression has massed for one last war. One last attempt to hold onto power. Rest assure, it has no intention of going quietly into the night. We must band together to cut off this vampires head, burn it's entire body and scatter it's ashes to the fore winds. It is not a war that will end with one act. Thus, fair weather blacks and patriots need not apply, if they are unwilling to finish the job long term.
I remember many who pooh poohed the idea of Obama even being elected as a false concept. Then changing their views to, if he was elected, then he must be a sellout. Only on administration has been scandal free. Only on successfully fought off a great recession and hostile congress for most of his time in office. This brother is the only president that my son knows as the leader of the free world as an adult. If we had only voted in the off year elections, what could he have accomplished? What could we have accomplished?
