NAACP selects Brooks as new president and CEO

WASHINGTON (AP) — The NAACP on Saturday announced that lawyer and activist Cornell William Brooks would become its new national president and CEO.

The selection of Brooks came as the nation celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision by the Supreme Court which outlawed segregation in public school, a lawsuit that was argued by the organization's legal arm.

Brooks, 53, of Annandale, New Jersey, will become the organization's 18th national president, replacing interim leader Lorraine Miller. Miller has been serving in that position since Benjamin Jealous ended his five-year tenure last year.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Brooks said he was looking forward to the work.

He looks just as innocent and trust worthy as the last one. This is the thing, many of these organization when they were relatively small was for the race. But money, power, and politics found it's way in and corrupted them. Call me cynical...but we have been shown this too many times. IMO, they all have a face they show the public (the one you see in the pic) and the one that makes deals behind closed doors, which is the real one. The last one knew the history of the clipper's owner, and still gave him an award, and was about to give him another one. That sort of thing don't happen without money changing hands, or political favors being offered.

But money, power, and politics found it's way in and corrupted them. Call me cynical...but we have been shown this too many times. IMO, they all have a face they show the public (the one you see in the pic) and the one that makes deals behind closed doors, which is the real one. The last one knew the history of the clipper's owner, and still gave him an award, and was about to give him another one. Exclusively, a black institution should be owned, operation and funded by black people, and for the explicit purpose of black people. Unfortunately, very few, if any, fit this definition. For instance, the NAACP, over the past 100 years, is not a black institution for the sole purpose of liberating black folk. The list goes on and on. But the biggest outlier is funding, sponsoring and subsidy. When financial sources outside the group, if you will, are relied upon, so will the purposes of the group be proportionally compromised.

Deals going down behind close doors, corruption, showing one face over another, etc... But on top of all of that, although the NAACP is widely viewed as a black organization, cosmetically; it is far from having a sole concentration on black issues. This is the one time that: if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it isn't a duck.
