Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Michael Jordan: ‘He Took Commerce Over Conscience’

Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar isn’t one to mince words when it comes to his social and political views. Over the last couple of years, Abdul-Jabbar has been vocal about politics and activism, not only in the U.S. but abroad. And it’s safe to say he’s made good use of his time since retiring from basketball.

But not every basketball player is as astute as Abdul-Jabbar when it comes to politics, and in a recent interview with NPR, the former Los Angeles Laker had a few things to say about Michael Jordan with regard to the infamous “Republicans buy sneakers, too” comment Jordan reportedly made in 1990.

“You can’t be afraid of losing shoe sales if you’re worried about your civil and human rights,” Abdul-Jabbar told NPR.

And it’s those sneaker sales that have kept Jordan at the top of the list of highest-paying athletes even though he’s retired.

“He took commerce over conscience. It’s unfortunate for him, but he’s gotta live with it,” Abdul-Jabbar went on to say.

Glasses Malone Criticizes Michael Jordan For Investing In Prisons

Glasses Malone took to Twitter yesterday (November 4) to express his approval of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s criticism of Michael Jordan.

“Me & Kareem Abdul Jabber agree on Jordan….,” the Watts, California rapper writes with a link to a Fox Sports article entitled “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Michael Jordan chose shoes over human rights.”

The article quotes an interview with NPR where the NBA all-time leading scorer outs Michael Jordan over his “Republicans buy sneakers, too” comment.

“You can’t be afraid of losing shoe sales if you’re worried about your civil and human rights,” Abdul-Jabbar says. “You can’t be worried about that. That’s just the way it is. He took commerce over conscience. That’s unfortunate for him, but he’s got to live with it.

In an interview with The Breakfast Club in September, Glasses Malone expressed similar sentiments toward the basketball legend.

“I don’t wear Jordans no more ’cause he be into all of that,” he says about Jordan’s connections with the prison industrial complex. “He invests in all that. He invests into more prisons than schools. I ain’t really into him right now. I won’t buy another pair of his shoes for sure.”

I posted this on FB and got some heated replies that MJ doesn't use prison labor.

OK. MJ does not use prison labor, NIKE DOES. MJ getting paid from Nike using prison labor.

I'm so disappointed that more Black folk do not care, or even know about, about the Prison Industrial Complex (PIC).
Keep your Nike sneakers. I got a pair myself for the gym. I'm not a sneaker person.
I plan to wear them out and never wear another pair. Maybe. I might just throw them away now.

The thing is, that I wish more of Our people would think about, how does prison labor work? How are the prisons empowered to keep enough prisoners locked down to perform the contracted labor.?
Are all prisoners even guilty of a crime?
