A new study that looks at the genetic makeup of Americans confirmed what most scientists had known and most racists probably didn’t: We are a lot more biracial than people realize.
In the study, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, researchers sampled the DNA of Americans from regions across the United States to create a genetic map of the country. What they found was that many of those who self-identified as “white” oftentimes had African DNA. The phenomenon was especially intense in the South, where about 10 percent of all self-identified white people were at least slightly black.
This is probably a tough pill to swallow for many of the white supremacists that drape their homes in Confederate flags and long for the days of segregation. It might make them think twice about that, if they realize that, despite their pale complexion, they themselves may have to take to drinking from a separate water fountain once their equally racist neighbors found out about their African ancestry.
South Carolina and Louisiana were the two states found to have the most unsuspecting biracial individuals. Louisiana is the home of the spokesman for white, conservatives everywhere. Phil Robertson, of the Duck Dynasty family, who explicitly stated how he wished black people would go back to living under Jim Crow, (where he believes they were happiest) may want to get himself tested. I’d gladly foot the bill if it meant it led to something like the time an unapolegetic white supremacist went onto national television and found out he was 14% “sub-Saharan African.”
If you’re curious where your state falls, the researchers composed a helpful map:
Of course, much of the African DNA that white Southerners now hold comes from the country’s shameful legacy of slavery. It’s not just former presidents that had sexual relations with their slaves, the practice was disturbingly common. Consequently, it should be no surprise that the researchers found that most of the African-American ancestors to modern-day white people were women and that most of it happened during the early 1800s – when slavery was still thriving.
Another interesting point that the study found was how much “African ancestry” it takes before a person begins identifying as black. The conclusion: Around 28 percent. As people reach “50 percent” – or half-black, half-white – they almost unanimously identify as black. Our own president is an example. Technically, biracial, nobody – from himself to the racist conservatives that hate him – considers him anything but black. That falls in line with what others report as well. Perhaps because of the legacy of belief in white superiority, you are no longer “white” if you have even a hint of blackness.
What this study shows is that while the social construct of race is still very much alive, the biological underpinnings are largely nonsensical. As the nation struggles with racism – from anti-Obama hatred to discrimination by police – it may be helpful to keep in mind that the issue isn’t (and pardon the pun) as black and white as one would think. The most militant white supremacist may have a substantial amount of African ancestry. He may not like that his identity is being eroded by inconvenient truths, but it may cause him to at least reflect on the fact that a simple “in-group, out-group” dichotomy isn’t so straightforward.
