As many of the french planters scurried out of Haiti/Santo Dominque during the Haitian Revolution in the 1790's, to New Orleans, which was French territory, they also left for Cuba, and the Africans created a very rich hybrid Haitian Cuban culture that still exists today... Later came the Jamaicans and Barbadians to plant and chop the Sugar Cane, but that's another story for another time... For now, Check out this very interesting webpage on Cuban-Haitian culture...
