I'm going to go with Krugman on this one. If one party can effectively hold the country hostage, democracy can't work like it's supposed to.

It's definitely happened before on this large a scale (shutting down the government vs. making it impossible to be legislatively productive in the short term).

While I agree that conservatives in the U.S are responsible for a lot of this mess, I can't help but forget the inability of the democratic party to be a bit more assertive when they hold the house majority. I guess it's a fair point to make that the democratics in the U.S tend to actually have discussions / disagreements along legislative lines while the conservative members of congress for the most part are an angry hive arm of corporate/wealthy interests.

.......Krugman makes very valid and salient points; Mr. Obama gave in to ruthless Republicans bent on serving him a one-term Presidency, by the Norquist pledge, no new Taxes.

As a result, the ship could sink, unless both sides wake up: America is the Fall before Rome.
