Think that you are the universal human being and not a Hindu or a Christian or a Muslim. You belong to all the Religions, which are the same syllabus in different languages. The same Lord appeared in different forms. Every Religion has a Gem. Use all the Gems in your spiritual life. Are you not using the Muslim petrol, scientific technology of Christians and analytical brain of Hindus in your materialistic life? Similarly you can use the merit of each Religion. Suppose paddy is grown in one part, pulses are grown in another part and vegetables are grown in some other part of the country. The department of civil supplies is moving rice, pulses and vegetables through out the country so that every person in the country has rice, pulses and vegetable curry in his meal plate. Such a meal only can give the full satisfaction to every body.

Muslims are famous in regularity, discipline and firmness in the faith of the Lord. Even if it is not a holiday and even if it is working time and even in the journey they will pray the Lord. Hindus worship the Lord in the leisure time and Christians worship the Lord on a holiday. Similarly the love of Christians is a Gem. They love even their enemies and give funds to the spiritual centers of other Religions also. In Hindus tolerance is the Gem. They worship different forms of the same Lord. Therefore have firm faith and discipline like a Muslim. Show love even to your enemies like a Christian. Worship the different forms of the same Lord of all the Religions in the same manner like a Hindu. All these merits are like rivers merging in the ocean of spiritualism. Be a sea fish. Don’t be a stagnant river fish. All the Religions in the advanced stage mix and become one and the same in the spiritual ocean.

Let us stop fighting in the name of religion & God

This entire earth is the property of the absolute God since it is created by Him. No human being created any region of this earth and therefore the absolute right of this entire earth belongs to the absolute God only. It is the climax of foolishness of human beings to fight and kill each other for the sake of the borders of divisions of countries and for the ownership of any region on this earth.

The representatives of all the countries on this earth should unite and form a Central Government to control the terrorism in any country. It should be responsible for the peace of the entire world. If the peace is achieved in entire world in this way, it is a real achievement of the success of this holy Christmas.

Universal spirituality is the solution for these problems.. The Universal Spirituality is the basic universal knowledge or philosophy. The one God, who created this entire creation and who is the kind Father of all humanity, preached the same common universal knowledge to people in different places and times. The Universal Religion is the universal practical path of worshipping that one God and maintaining justice and peace in the world. The mode of worship is a part of culture and the variations in it are a matter of personal choice. The spirituality and religion are thus the theoretical and practical parts of the spiritual path and both are universal.

Universal Spirituality and Universal Religion have been established by God Datta now through this Datta Swami. Earlier, Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa had experienced the unity of all religions by practicing every religion for some time. Śaṅkara had similarly, established the unity of all the sub-religions within Hinduism. Shri Shirdi Sai Baba and Shri Satya Sai Baba too had established the unity of world religions. Every religion will lead a person to the same God. So, conversion to another religion is the biggest foolishness that any devotee can do. When all roads lead to the same center, is it not the height of foolishness to leave your road and laterally cross over to another road that leads to the same center? Good times for this entire world are very near. This Universal Spirituality and Religion will bring tremendous unity among all religions. You said that you are following the philosophy of Hinduism. In the spiritual knowledge or philosophy there is no name of any religion since knowledge is always universal.

Parents take complete care of their children during their childhood. The efforts taken by the parents for their children is service, which is also known as the sacrifice of work. Finally, the parents also transfer all their wealth to their children through their will. This transferring of the wealth is called the sacrifice of the fruit of their work since wealth is the fruit of work. So, the sacrifice of the parents for the sake of their children in terms of the sacrifice of work and the fruit of work is complete. Yet most parents save some wealth for their own old age believing that they will live until they become old. They feel there is a risk in sacrificing their entire wealth to their issues while they are still alive. There is a possibility that if their children are not good, they might not take care of the parents in the future when the parents become old. Sometimes, even if the children are good they could be incapable of serving their parents due to some unfortunate circumstances.

The case of God is different from one’s children. God is not bad; He is extremely good. He is also never incapable. In fact, He is omnipotent. Another important difference is that while one’s children are seen with one’s eyes, God is not seen. There is insecurity for those who depend on the children who are seen by their eyes. But there is complete security for those who depend on the unseen God. Ignorant souls only believe in perception. Giving more importance to their unreliable children who are seen, they shower their real love upon the children. The proof of real love is karma yoga. The sacrifice of work and the fruit of work together are called karma yoga. It is the proof of real love since we practically serve and sacrifice our money only for those whom we truly love. Ignorant people truly love only their children and so they do this karma yoga only for their children who are unreliable. They do not truly love God and they do not do karma yoga for Him even though He is supremely reliable, just because He is unseen. Real devotees are the ones who believe in God through inference. They believe in the unseen, unimaginable God by observing His miracles which are visible but unimaginable. Inference, of course, includes perception since the miracles are perceived. This mentality of the majority of human beings is the climax of blind ignorance. Such blind ignorance is actually not based on either perception or inference but is based only on solidified worldly fascination!

Not only can one adopt any mode of worship, but one can also pray to any form of God belonging to any religion, based on one’s personal liking. The different forms of God of various religions are not different since the one and only God exists in every one of them. When this is the truth of even the forms of God in different religions, then what to speak of the different modes of prayer in religions?

One can adopt any mode of prayer of any religion if you like it. This is the basic right of every person in the Universal Religion, which is based on Universal Spirituality.

It is better to take the spiritual practices and concepts of all religions and study in depth so that all can find the basic essence to be one and same. When this is done, though it is a tedious process involving hot arguments, finally, the discovered basic essence brings wonderful correlation between religions so that a permanent solution comes out to establish unity among the followers of all religions. A permanent solution always needs time and strain, but, permanent is permanent and temporary is temporary.

The main problem for the differences in the religions is that the present day religions are not the pure sacred original religions established in the past by the original founders of religions, who were human incarnations of God.
In the past time, even the followers were very pure implementing the original concepts of their religions without any extra interpretations and extra insertions. As time passed on, selfish wrong followers came in to every religion and inserted their opinions in the name of original scripture. As a result of this, all the original religions are adulterated. Unless we do sharp analysis to remove the bad present in every religion, the good in every religion will not come out. When the basic good truths originally established by the founders come out, you will find unity in all these good truths so that the differences between followers disappear resulting in excellent correlation and mutual love in the entire humanity.

Before doing this sharp analysis, we must have open mind to receive truth as truth and false as false, whether the truth or false belongs to our religion or to other religions. We must be prepared to accept the truth of the opposite side and false of our side with a view that such acceptance need not be considered as self defeat and victory of others. We must be favouring such angle with a view that such a result benefits us to rectify our mistake with the help of others. Unless this attitude is developed before such correlation-analysis, people will not even proceed into the analysis and even if they proceed, very shortly, quarrels appear. We must have very broad and very open mind because there is only one God, who created this entire humanity as said by every religion.

The unimaginable God and His unimaginable power (māyā) are one and the same, whereas God’s imaginable power is different from Him. It has undergone modification to become creation (prakṛti) or it appears to be creation. How the unimaginable God possesses an imaginable power, which is different from Him, is unimaginable. Such a wonder is possible only due to His unimaginable power! Our logical analysis and entire knowledge are limited only to this creation, which is the imaginable domain. Hence, it is a waste of time to think about any aspect of the unimaginable domain.

This world, which is the imaginable domain, has plurality. The plurality supplies different media for the unimaginable God for His expression. It enables Him to enter into various selected human devotees in order to become Human Incarnations of God. The human devotee becomes a medium for the entry of the unimaginable God. Thus, God has incarnated in this world in different regions in different times to establish the different religions in the world. Of course, the unimaginable God does not directly enter any medium.

At the very beginning of creation, the unimaginable God first created subtle energy or space. He created the first form or body out of that subtle energy and entered into it to become the first Energetic Incarnation. This first energetic form became the first medium of God. This first mediated form of God or the first Energetic Incarnation is called as Datta or Īśvara in Hinduism and Father of heaven in other religions. There is no trace of difference between the unimaginable God and the first Energetic Incarnation, except that the former is unimaginable while the latter is imaginable. The energetic form of Datta is visible to energetic beings in the upper worlds.

For humans on earth, Datta is invisible but still imaginable. The first Energetic Incarnation, Datta, is also eternal like the unimaginable God; i.e. both have no end. The only difference is that Datta had a beginning from the point of view of His energetic medium, while the unimaginable God has no beginning. It is this Datta that enters a selected human devotee to become a Human Incarnation. The unimaginable God is permanently present in the energetic medium of Datta. That Datta, containing the unimaginable God, enters into the physical medium of a human devotee. Thus, the unimaginable God is equally present in the Human Incarnation.

God incarnates in human form on earth in every human generation. The human media into which God Datta enters each time is different as a result of the plurality that is inherent in the imaginable domain. In other words, one Incarnation looks different from another Incarnation. One Incarnation may appear in a place where people follow say Hinduism, while another Incarnation may appear in a place where people follow a different religion. The Incarnation’s external dress, language, and manners will naturally be according to the culture of the place where He has appeared. This enables Him to mix freely with the people He has come to preach and uplift. But these differences are only external.

From the point of view of the first Energetic Incarnation, Datta or Father of heaven, present in each of them, all Incarnations are one and same. From the point of view of the unimaginable God present in all the Incarnations too, they are one and the same. Thus, all these different mediated Gods are actually one in essence. If you look at the medium, which is part of the imaginable domain, there is plurality. If you look at the internal God Datta or the unimaginable God present in all of them, then there is only one. This truth applies equally to the sub-religions within Hinduism or the different world religions. This analysis is the fundamental basis for bringing unity among the sub-religions of Hinduism and among the various religions in the world.

None is greater than the creator, ruler and final destroyer of this universe. I am the creator, ruler and destroyer of this creation. You can worship Me in different ways as per the convenience of your mind. Don’t go against your mind in selecting the mode of worship since all modes are one and the same worship.

Reading divine books, singing divine songs, dancing with divine modes, saluting God, going round the statue of God, seeing divine cinemas, looking My photos, hearing My stories, participating in divine debates and discussions, writing about Me, speaking about Me to others and propagating Me and My knowledge in the world are the different modes of My worship. Do not insult any divine form of God including formless God since a formless lump has also a form. Formless God is also a lump form and is the medium of God only since God is unimaginable beyond form and formless media.

Do not criticize any divine preacher or divine human incarnation in anyway. Think about your level before criticizing others. You should not criticize any mode of worship. Selection of mode of worship depends upon the specific liking of mind, which differs from one person to the other. If somebody is defective in the spiritual path, explain the truth by friendly discussion and don’t enter into hot arguments. Forms of God may be different and paths to reach God also may be different, but, God is only one and the same in every sub-religion or religion.

The quantity (weight) of gold submitted by you matters for sanction of your loan by bank and not the variety of golden jewels submitted. How much fruit of work is sacrificed by you? How much energy is spent by you in the service? How much time could be allotted by you in His work?—are the various branches of your spiritual tree and the main stem of the tree is how much you are withdrawn from the aspiration of fruit in return from God?

Generally, mind requires variety because it is unstable in one mode. It is a flowing stream of nervous energy with constant motion of waves. It likes different forms of God and different modes of worship in different times. Since the ultimate value depends on practical service and practical sacrifice only, as long as the value is maintained, variety does not matter at all.

For the same amount of money, you may purchase one item or many items as per their individual rates. As long as the mind is interested, you can continue with a specific form in a specific mode of worship only for any length of time. Whether you are towards north direction (God) or towards south direction (world) - is the most important point. In each direction (North or south) there are different sub-directions ranging from east to west and each sub-direction is in different levels.

Variety doesn’t matter since change of variety is the nature of mind. If you maintain the quality of devotion (Non aspiration for fruit in return), quantity of devotion (allotting more time, energy and fruit of work), direction of devotion (theory transforming in to practice), relevance of devotion (concentrating on the relevant contemporary human incarnation) and level of devotion (ability to sacrifice anything and anyone for the sake of God), the spiritual path becomes fruitful.

Any path directed towards Me is the best and any path diverted towards the world is the worst. No path by itself is good or bad. The paths directed towards world may differ within themselves as relatively good (justice) or bad (injustice) and this relative difference is limited to the area of the world (Pravrutti) only as long as the direction to God (Nivrutti) doesn’t come into the picture. God is greater than even the welfare of the world and this point is tested by God in the case of divine servants working for the welfare of the world.

You must work for welfare of the world since such welfare is liked by God. As a Nivrutti-devotee, you should not keep the welfare of the world above God. The Veda says that nothing and nobody is even equal to God and not to speak of more than God (Natatsamah…). In the earlier stage, try to serve Me adjusting yourself to the external atmosphere (your family and society) and the varying nature of mind.

You should not hurt any soul for My sake and you should reach Me rejecting everything and everyone by not hurting anyone even a little. You can adopt the method of dramatic action for this purpose like anesthesia in performing surgery, which is not a sin at all since I am the goal.

Universal Spirituality or Universal Religion is like the central government of India and the specific religion followed by any person, is like the state government of any one state in India. The citizen belongs to both the central and state governments simultaneously. This means that you can be a follower of Universal Religion while still being a follower of your own religion. Universal Religion pervades all religions in the world. It means that you can continue to follow your own religion. There is no need to convert to any other religion. The important point you have to learn from Universal Religion is that you should never criticize other religions. The same God appeared in different forms at different places, in different times. Each time the form taken up by Him was according to the specific culture of each place. He preached the same spiritual knowledge in different languages. All religions have some merits and some defects. The merits are due to the original preaching of God whereas the defects are due to wrong ideas introduced by the followers later on. You have to be selective and pick only the merits of all religions.

Each religion has its own special merits that are seen prominently in that religion. It does not mean other religions do not have those merits but it is just that they are more prominently seen in a certain religion. Spiritual knowledge is the merit of Hinduism. Knowledge is the intellectual part of the spiritual effort which is called jñāna yoga. Devotion to God, which is known as bhakti yoga, is the merit of Islam. It is the emotional part of the spiritual effort. The practical part of the spiritual effort is service and donation.

Donation of one’s hard-earned money is said to be the sacrifice of the fruit of one’s work. Service and donation together are called karma yoga and it is the merit of Christianity. Purifying one’s devotion to God by making it free of any worldly aspiration or desire is the merit of Buddhism. Practicing non-violence towards all souls is the merit of Jainism. Apart from the various religions, science too has its merit and it has a place in Universal Spirituality. The sharp analysis of any concept without blind belief is the merit of science.

Thus, on your spiritual journey towards God, you must pick the merits of all religions. Universal Religion or Universal Spirituality is not a specific religion to be listed along with the religions of the world. It is meant for the establishment of peace and harmony in this world. Since I am born as Hindu, I follow My religion. But I realize that all other religions are the equally-correct paths starting from different directions but all leading to the same God at the center. The six religions or philosophies mentioned above are like six bottles containing the same medicine of spiritual knowledge. Secularism means consuming the medicine-like spiritual knowledge from any one of the six bottles, realizing that the same medicine is present in all the six bottles. But the so-called secularism of today is false secularism. It rejects all religions. It is like saying that since all the bottles contain the same medicine, there is no need to consume the medicines from any of them!

Doing the ritual-sacrifice (feeding hungry devotees with ghee-fried food and not burning ghee in the physical fire), singing divine songs, meditation, reading spiritual books, participating in spiritual discussions, seeing My pictures, etc., are various ways of My worship. You can engage Yourself in any way as per the convenience of Your mind and external atmosphere. Similarly, You can worship any form of Me as You like.

Whatever may be the form and whatever may be the way, Your interest should be spontaneous love and not by force due to desire for some fruit. I like such natural devotion only. The devotion due to interest in fruit is not natural and I hate it. Such devotion for fruit is like the false love expressed by a prostitute for Your money. As Your love appears on Your life partner and children in natural and spontaneous way without any force, such true love is liked by Me. For the expression of true love, there is no specific place, specific time and specific way of expression.

As You are expressing Your true love on Your beloved issue in any place at any time and in any way using spontaneous words, You shall worship Me in the same way. Are You reciting any previously written dialogue before Your issue to express Your true love? Why are You reciting previously written prayers before Me? As You are not aspiring any fruit in return from Your issue, so also, if You don’t aspire any fruit from Me, Your worship will be natural and spontaneous.

All the above ways please Me. But, participation in My service by doing propagation of My spiritual knowledge is directly the salvation itself. Hence, only a salvated soul can participate in My service. Today, the right direction to be obtained by true knowledge is missing and hence, the need of this hour is propagation of My spiritual knowledge. My service is not an effort to please Me, but, it is the fruit given by Me for Your spiritual effort!

The unimaginable God is beyond space and time and He remains unimaginable due to this reason only. From the unimaginable God, imaginable space etc., were generated, which form this entire imaginable world. In the worldly logic, there is no single example of generation of imaginable item from unimaginable item because in the imaginable domain (world), there is no unimaginable item at all — like this, if one realizes, let him belong to Eastern religion or Western religion, such a person is omniscient. This is My logical conclusion.

The unimaginable God created subtle energy or space so that an energetic body is created from subtle energy and remaining subtle energy is in the form of space, which is occupied by the created energetic body to be called as absolute space since such first energetic body will never disappear. The unimaginable God enters this first energetic body called as first energetic incarnation or Eshwara or Lord or Father of heaven (Allah/Narayana/Yahewah etc) called as Datta meaning that the unimaginable God is ‘given’ to the world for clear vision. Such incarnation is called as descended God because the omnipotent unimaginable God can alone cross the unimaginable link between God and space to come down. This first energetic body bound by space can’t cross this link to become ascended body. This first energetic incarnation enters other energetic bodies and human bodies to become energetic and human incarnations respectively in future.

This Father of heaven merged by unimaginable God creates the five elements and souls gradually due to His unimaginable power, which form this entire world — like this, if one realizes, let him belong to Eastern religion or Western religion, such a person is omniscient. This is My logical conclusion.

The first energetic incarnation along with merged unimaginable God is the common item in every medium and thus, same God is common in all religions even though media differ. Hence, only one God exists in all religions. Religion is the path to please the same one God. Religions differ due to the difference in the level, language, culture, etc., of different souls in different regions. The starting point or soul and ending point or God are same in every religion. Hinduism with many sub-religions is a mini representative model of world with various religions and in both (sub-religions of Hinduism and religions of world), we find internal unity in external diversity — like this, if one realizes, let him belong to Eastern religion or Western religion, such a person is omniscient. This is My logical conclusion.

Unity of Worldly Religions:

The unimaginable God gets mediated by different imaginable media (items of imaginable creation) becoming different mediated Gods of various worldly religions. The difference is only in the external imaginable media and not in the internal unimaginable God. This is the unity in diversity. When two countries are disconnected in the past time, let us assume that a religion came in one country, which didn’t reach the other disconnected country immediately in which several generations have gone without knowing the religious Gospel of God in the other country. The souls of these generations have gone to hell unnecessarily for their no fault since the other religion didn’t reach them. The other religion says that the people, who didn’t follow their Gospel will go to hell. Is it not partiality of God to a specific country? The other religion says that their God created this earth and all the humanity on it. Then, why is this partiality of Divine Father to a specific country without reason? Good and bad people exist in every country. The other religion can’t answer this question. But, we answer this, removing the rubbed partiality on God.

Our answer is—the unimaginable God came to every country in a specific imaginable medium and preached the same syllabus of spiritual knowledge in their languages. Those, who followed the syllabus (not language) go to God and those who deviate from syllabus go to hell. By this, no injustice happened to anybody of any generation in any disconnected country due to lack communication. Hence, there is no partiality of the one unimaginable God! Every religion says that their God (by virtue of a specific medium of God) alone created this earth. Unfortunately, there is only one earth!, which means that only one God must have existed. That one God is the inner unimaginable God, who is not seen (not even imagined) by any religious soul since the soul sees only the different external media and gets clutched in the false concept of different Gods.

One can follow own religion, even in conservative way, without criticising other religions. To avoid this split, ‘Universal Religion’ stands as the Central Government and every human being is in its own religion only as under the State Government (one’s own religion is the state). Being in your own religion, you can affiliate to Universal Religion since both are complimentary to each other. Swami gave correlation of the Veda, the Bible and the Quran in detail as can be seen in the above referred website.

? Every human being is having a bad habit of looking at his own merits and looking at the defects of others. This is egoism mixed with ignorance and is very difficult to be cured like diabetes associated with blood pressure! Anybody looking at his own defects and looking at the merits of others will always rise up. Similarly, any human being always looking at his merits and looking at the defects of others will go down only.

Every religion shall avoid the self-praise and criticism of other religions. All religions have both merits and defects because any human being in any country belonging to any religion has both merits and defects. Every human being shall belong to the universal religion to pick up only the merits from each religion and progress towards God in the spiritual path that contains only merits. Truth is always bitter and the preacher following truth can’t avoid the simultaneous bitterness. Saint Kabir says that the enemy scolding you is your real well-wisher whereas the friend praising you is not your real well-wisher!

Why preachings of various divine personalities seems to be different?

All the divine preachers are incarnations of the same God. Then, why differences appear in their preachings? The differences are due to the differences in the receivers (disciples) existing in their times. If simply, the same truth is announced in all the times to receivers of different mentalities, such preachings are not heard by the disciples like the deaf not hearing the conch shells blown! The disciples will listen only if the preachings are liked by their defective psychologies. Without listening the concepts, realization can’t come like without eating, digestion can’t take place! A scholar simply bothers about preaching the truth only, whatever may be the result. A preacher (Guru) twists the concept for the sake of listening and subsequent assimilation in the disciples. Twist is temporary and the string twisted comes back to the original state in no time. Gradually, the truth comes back to its original stage as the receiver climbs upper step. Unless these twists made due to different psychologies of receivers are explained in view of the times in which divine preachers appeared, the twists will continue as permanent deformations of the truth and this leads anybody not to believe that all these divine personalities are incarnations of same God. The Veda says that the same truth is spoken in several ways (twists) by preachers (ekam sat vipraa bahudaa vadanti).

The reasons and circumstances for such variation in the speeches of the preachers are explained by God Datta to bring unification in the divine preachers resulting in the unification of all concepts of spiritual knowledge for the sake of welfare of entire humanity (Sutras 32 and 33 are in the context of the criticism of Shri Datta Swami by one advaita philosopher).]

While preaching spiritual knowledge, one preacher gives a simile to explain a certain point for the sake of the receiver’s effective understanding. The disciple of another preacher, who has come later on, criticizes that simile, pointing at the inapplicable side of that simile. Whenever a simile is given, one should only take the applicable side of the simile. Otherwise, it brings misunderstanding and leads to confusions, differences, and quarrels.

Every divine preacher in this world belonging to any religion is My Incarnation alone. I incarnate in every generation to remove the misinterpretation and misunderstanding of the concepts in spiritual knowledge made by the followers of previous religions. As I remove the misinterpretations by the proper correlation of concepts, the followers of every religion invent some new misinterpretations of other religions. This makes Me come again and again into this world in the form of Incarnations.

There are two levels, which are the level of God (paramārthadaśā) and the level of the soul (vyavahāradaśā). Both these levels should be studied independently. They should not be mixed since the imaginable soul is not the unimaginable God. My Incarnation shows that the unimaginable God becomes the imaginable soul for the purpose of expressing Himself to the imaginable souls. The Incarnation serves the purpose of preaching the true spiritual knowledge to souls, which is especially necessary in the context of such misunderstanding due to misinterpretations.

There is only one God for this entire universe
The universal religion

Difference is only due to external parameters, but, basically unity exists.

[All major religions like Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Science must be appreciated for contributing the major concepts of universal religion. There is only one God for this entire universe, who is unimaginable being the creator of space and hence, existing beyond space. Plurality is accepted only in imaginable items and it can’t be accepted in unimaginable items. Any number of unimaginable items result in one unimaginable item only. You can’t say that one unimaginable item is fighting or co-existing with another unimaginable item. Hence, there can be only one unimaginable God in all the mediated Gods of all religions.

Unimaginable God gets mediated by different media (parts of creation) for expression for the sake of different people speaking different languages and following different cultures. To become close to all the souls, the unimaginable God speaks different languages and follows different cultures when He gets mediated by different media in different places at the same time. All the people should recognize the same unimaginable God (unity) in different media (difference). The philosophies of all religions are spoken by the same unimaginable God and hence, must be same basically. These philosophies also differ externally because God follows the different psychologies of receivers in different places in different times resulting in multiplicity of external philosophy of different religions in various places. In the same religion also, different external philosophies appear in different times. Due to different psychologies of different types of people of the same religion, in the same place and in the same time also, different external philosophies appear.

A wise person must understand all these external parameters to realize the cause of difference without leaving the basic unity.]

The practical spiritual knowledge, which is the essence of the BIBLE and other scriptures is that you should approach God simply by your attraction to God (based on His Divine personality that is expressed through several stories presented in scriptures), which is the natural and spontaneous love or devotion.

The best example is your love for your issues in which you are prepared to sacrifice what all you earned in the entire life even though your issues are insulting you throughout your life. You are prepared to do any sin for their sake. Such love should be expressed to God aspiring no fruit in return as in the case of your issues.

You may argue that such love cannot be expressed to an outsider, be the God. Your argument is not correct if you take the example of a fan of a cinema hero. For the fan, the hero is outsider only. The fan is not benefited in any way from the hero. Moreover, the fan spends from his pocket only in the celebrations of new pictures of that hero. His love to that hero is so much that he takes away his life when the hero dies! Such love is not seen even in the case of issues!

What is the reason for such madness of love to the hero? In all the films of the hero, the personality of the hero is expressed in such climax so that the impression of the fan to the hero goes beyond even the climax. All these stories of God in scriptures are only the various films of that God-Hero. The difference between God and the cinema hero is that the stories of God are true and the stories presented in films about the hero are totally false and artificial.

If such love is developed in the mind of the fan by such false stories, how much love to God should be developed by these real stories! Hence, you should become such fan of God to worship Him simply based on your unassuming attraction to God and not based on the fruit in return. It is this fundamental cancerous point that brings failures in the approach to God.

God is always in the reverse gear. As you ask repeatedly for something it is pushed down and down. This is very clear even in our worldly experience. If you press the feet of your father asking for his property to be given to you, what a nasty opinion is developed in the mind of your father? You may keep the nasty opinion in your mind as secret and express the true devotion outside through acting since your father can’t know what is in your mind.

But, God is omniscient and knows everything present in your every internal nerve and hence you can never fool God. Therefore, you should totally detach from the desire and worship God as in the case of that fan to that cinema hero.

When you are not aspiring any fruit in return and express your real love on God based on your attraction to Him due to the impression of His Divine personality on you, God grants everything asked by you and also not asked by you, which is good for you.

This is the essence of the Gita, which says that you must worship God without any desire. Narada in his Bhakti-sutras says that one way of developing the devotion is to hear the stories of God, which project His Divine personality that develops terrible attraction in your mind without the context of fruit in return (Tat kathaa shravanaadishu…).

You need not worry about the historical aspects of these stories like time and space, which are relative with respect to the absolute God. God is beyond space and time. Therefore, the essence of the message to any ordinary human being in this world is to read the stories of God and to see the pictures of God so that a spontaneous inspiration of attraction develops in the mind without any reference to the context of the desire or fruit.

Even if you observe social pictures, you super impose God on that hero trying always to establish justice in the society, thereby even the social picture is turned to a Divine story based on the concept of the hero as representative model (Pratika) of God. This was the real tradition of our ancient sages.

Unfortunately, we are in the present blind tradition, which was developed by our ancestors in the middle age connecting God always to the fulfillment of desire by achieving its related fruit. Whenever we do worship of God in the form of rituals, the very starting point is to say ‘Samkalpa’ in which the list of all worldly desires are mentioned. From our birth we are grown up in this blind psychology of God linked to the fruit(result).

The very first introduction of God to us was given in terms of fulfillment of desire and attainment of fruit only. The theoretical devotion like prayers to achieve a practical fruit from God is like the false love of a prostitute, who extracts your money through sweet words (Veshyaa bhakti).

Sometimes, the practical devotion in terms of service to God is also seen, which is only a business deal of exchange of practical devotion with practical fruit (Vaishya bhakti). Of course, in the Vedas also, the devotion linked to fulfillment of desires is projected as instrumental devotion (Kaamya bhakti) in which God becomes the instrument to achieve a desired fruit.

The Vedas have expressed this way for the beginners in the spiritual path, who are like children going to school with the help of the chocolate. After sometime, as the child gets interest in the process of learning, the chocolate gets dropped. But, unfortunately, we are going to the school only for the chocolates from birth to death. I’m not telling to eradicate LKG class from the school. I’m only telling that you should not sit in the LKG class throughout your life.

After obtaining divine nectar, one can taste it and develop a very strong attachment to it. The detachment from coffee then comes naturally due to the attachment to the taste of the divine nectar. After tasting the divine nectar, You need not put any effort to get detached from coffee. But before obtaining the divine nectar and tasting it, You have to put in a lot of hard effort to achieve the divine nectar. Since You have not tasted the divine nectar, You are tempted to drink coffee and You have to forcibly avoid coffee. Similarly, You have to put some effort forcibly to detach from Your worldly bonds before attaining and tasting God. This is the starting trouble, in which the majority of humanity is trapped.

Initial detachment from unnecessary worldly matters has to be achieved through force. Such detachment includes avoiding unnecessary talking and listening to the gossip of worldly people, reading unnecessary worldly books and seeing unnecessary worldly films. Such forcible detachment saves energy, time and money. This wasted energy, time and money can be used for God instead, following the principle of waste-to-wealth. In this way, the starting trouble can be overcome and one can at least reach God temporarily, and taste His subject (knowledge and devotion). Once the person is attracted by the taste of God, any further effort for worldly detachment is not necessary.

Detachment then takes place naturally. In this initial stage, there is no need be afraid that as a result of pursuing the spiritual path, one might develop so much detachment that one might not be able to fulfill one’s worldly duties. The reason is that only one soul, among millions of souls and that too only after millions of births, reaches the highest state. It is only in that highest state that one’s worldly duties get dropped. But even in that climax-state, God performs the worldly duties for that rare soul! So, there is no reason to fear that the duties will get neglected!

The point raised by you about God protecting you in your worldly life, in case you are more involved in spiritual activity, is a very critical question. It needs a lot of explanation, which is given below and is to be understood carefully by you. It is a multi-dimensional question. I can simply give its answer through the following song sung often by Bhagavān Shri Satya Sai Baba in His divine discourses:

“O mind! Don’t aspire for any fruit in return from God;

As you aspire, the fruit goes down more and more,

So, if you don’t aspire for it, He gives it to you at once,

And know that He is omnipotent to give any fruit”.

Spiritual knowledge means (i) knowing the details of the personality of God, (ii) knowing that the soul is not God and (iii) knowing the real path by which God will be really pleased. Once you know that you are not God, there will be interest to know about God about whom several people in this world are speaking. Then, you should also inquire about the path to please God since He is omnipotent and if He is pleased, He can give anything to anyone at any time and at any place.

The human being passes through different stages in life called as āśramas. In the first stage, the person concentrates on education, which enables him to earn his living throughout his life. This stage is called brahmacarya. In the second stage, he starts earning and establishes himself in professional life, which also enables him to have a family. This is the stage of the householder or gṛhastha.

In the third stage, the person is established in his professional and family life well-enough that he has sufficient leisure time to concentrate on God. This third stage is called vānaprastha. In the fourth stage, the person retires from his profession as well as from his duties towards his family. In this stage, he does the work of propagation of spiritual knowledge to uplift others in the world. This stage is called saṁnyāsa. This is the normal course of the life of a normal human being in present times.

There are deviations from this normal course in the case of some human beings and the deviations may be towards the wrong side or the right side. The deviation to the wrong side means not developing an interest in God at any stage, and being involved in worldly life alone, till one’s death. The deviation to the right side means getting more and more interested in God and concentrating more and more on spiritual life.

There is no stipulated time or stage as mentioned above when one develops an interest in God. Any human being may develop an interest in God at any time. Generally, such interest comes due to a spiritual inclination in the person owing to the soul having led a spiritual life in the previous birth. A person may also develop an interest in God due to a congenial atmosphere around the soul, given to him by the grace of God. That congenial atmosphere around the soul is granted based on the soul’s spiritual life in the previous birth. This congenial spiritual atmosphere around the soul can include spiritual family members or other people outside the family who influence the soul positively. In any case, getting such a congenial spiritual atmosphere is indeed the greatest fortune of the soul.

When the soul develops interest and attachment to God, it naturally brings detachment from worldly bonds. No soul should try for worldly detachment directly. It is not only impossible, but it is also a total waste. The detachment from the world should come indirectly due to the attachment to God. Some people are afraid that attachment to God might lead to detachment from the world, which in turn would result in a materialistic loss. Nobody should have this false fear since the power with which the world attracts the soul is unimaginable! It is like a person avoiding divine nectar as much as possible, fearing that the attachment to the divine nectar might result in the detachment from ordinary food.

Here, divine nectar is like God’s grace and the food is like worldly life. The person is under the false impression that he will actually attain the divine nectar as soon as he develops interest and attachment to it! Developing interest in the Divine Nectar (God) itself is very difficult in the opposing atmosphere of the world. Even if the interest in the Divine Nectar is born, it is very difficult for it to grow in the negative worldly atmosphere. The Veda says that both spiritual and worldly atmospheres are opposite to each other (Dūramete viparīte viśūcī). Even if a person’s interest in the Divine Nectar (God) grows, it is very difficult for the person to stand firm in his attachment to It. It is even more difficult to cross all hurdles on the way and finally attain the Divine Nectar.

Older people know all these practical difficulties and hence are never worried even if their children develop an interest in God. In fact, parents encourage their children to worship God. They know very well that a mere interest in God will not result in attaining the ultimate grace of God, which could spoil their worldly life. Instead, due to their children’s devotion to the omnipotent God, He will help the children in every walk of their worldly lives! The Veda says that the attainment of the grace of God alone results in the spontaneous detachment from the world (Yadahareva virajet tadahareva pravrajet). This statement means that as soon as you get theoretical detachment from the world (virajet) due to attachment to God (bhakti), you will naturally detach from the world practically (pravrajet).

But we see that in the world, this rule fails. We see many people who have developed attachment (devotion) to God. Not only do they show theoretical devotion to God in the form of prayers, meditation and devotional songs, but they also show practical devotion, in the form of service and sacrifice. Yet, the natural consequent detachment from the world is not seen in them. When even theoretical detachment from the world is not seen, practical detachment from the world is out of the question! Why does this rule from the Veda fail practically in the case of devoted human beings? The reason lies in the fundamental step, which is developing an interest or theoretical attachment to God.

The fundamental reason is that people’s devotion is contaminated with the aspiration for worldly fruits from God in return for their devotion. They may be devoted to God, in both theory and practice, but it is only due to their aspiration for getting worldly fruits from God. The theoretical and practical devotion developed by these devotees is not due to real love for God. It is due to their real love for the worldly fruits, which they expect as boons from God. A plant dies if you introduce poison through water poured at its root. Similarly, the real theoretical and practical devotion dies due to the aspiration for worldly fruits in return from God, which is introduced at the root-level of developing an interest in God.

True spiritual knowledge can help you identify this main problem due to which your devotion fails to please God. The safest path is to learn spiritual knowledge and prevent the problem from arising before developing devotion to God. One should eliminate the tendency to use God as an instrument for attaining our worldly goals and ambitions. The devotion to God that will then develop will be free of aspiration. This is the best and easiest option. It is the defensive approach for protecting ourselves from the attack of the virus of worldly ambition.

The second option is treating the devotees, who have already been infected by the virus of the aspiration for attaining their worldly ambitions from God in return for their devotion. In the case of such infected patients, the treatment is complicated and it takes some time to cure the disease. It is a psychological disease and hence, careful handling of the patient is needed.

The first line of treatment is to initially allow the devotees’ worldly aspirations in the hope that in due course of time, they will be able to overcome the aspirations and develop real devotion for God. It is essential to play along with the person for some time just as you have to run along with a powerful running bull for some time before you can control it. Following this approach, God responds to the prayers and worship of devotees who have desires for worldly fruits as boons from God.

The Veda also reveals formal sacrifices as paths to attain heavenly boons from God. These Vedic sacrifices essentially involve prayers to God along with the distribution of cooked food to devotees. Śaṅkara has clarified that the Veda, by prescribing these formal sacrifices, does not induce the desire for the boons in the devotees. It only provides a path to fulfilling the desires of the devotees who already have the desires for the boons. The treatment does not induce the disease in the patient; it only aims to cure the patient! In the course of time, the devotee is expected to develop some real devotion for God. When the devotee sees that God has always been by his side and has helped him in fulfilling his worldly desires, he can develop some real love for God, which is beyond the aspiration for worldly fruits.

Experiencing the greatness and kindness of God, he may realize that the eternal God should not be used as an instrument for attaining temporary worldly fruits (Nāstyakṛtaḥ kṛteneti—Veda). This is the sign of the cure.

In some cases, as the desires get fulfilled, more desires flare up and the unreal devotion to God for the sake of getting boons continues. It means that the first line of treatment has been ineffective. Then the second line of treatment is started. This treatment takes an offensive approach. God acts shrewdly in giving boons. Boons are the fruits of a person’s good deeds in order to encourage their good deeds. Conversely, worldly difficulties and illnesses are the fruits of sinful deeds. They are punishments to discourage sin. When these souls demand for undeserved boons in the present, God merely draws some reward, which they were supposed to enjoy in the future and grants it to them in the form of a boon in the present.

This premature withdrawal of the soul’s good fruits leads to a loss in the value of the fruit. Similarly, when such devotees pray for their present difficulties to be removed, God merely postpones these punishments for the souls’ sins, to the future with increased interest. Thus, in this second offensive line of treatment, God ensures that even if the souls do not get cured of the disease of worldly ambition, neither He nor His constitution is exploited by these souls at any time.

There are two categories of souls who need this second line of treatment to cure their worldly ambition. The worst category of souls try to get practical boons from God in exchange for their theoretical devotion to Him. They only worship God through verbal and mental forms of worship such as prayers, meditation, and singing of devotional songs. Yet they expect practical boons from Him in the form of health, wealth and protection.

Such devotion is the worst kind of devotion and is called as prostitution-devotion. A slightly better form of devotion is to try to get practical boons from God in exchange for their practical devotion to Him. In other words, apart from theoretical devotion the devotee practically donates some money for God, but expects much more in return. This is called business-devotion. Both prostitution-devotion and business-devotion are forms of unreal devotion. In both forms, the devotee’s real devotion is only for the worldly fruits and not for God at all!

The best-possible devotion available in the world is issue-devotion, which is the devotion to God as a parent is devoted to his or her child. Parents not only love their issues theoretically but they also practically serve their child and sacrifice the fruit of their work (money) to their issues. The practical devotion is the proof of their theoretical devotion to their children. Their theoretical and practical devotion to their children is free from the aspiration for any fruit in return from the children.

The parents continue their practical devotion even if their children behave badly with them. At the most, the parents may scold their children for behaving badly with them, but there is no change in their practical devotion to the children! In this issue-devotion, it is very important to keep God in the place of the issues and to keep ourselves in the place of the parents; not vice versa! In other words, we should always practically serve God and sacrifice our money for God without expecting anything in return from Him and we should continue the practical devotion even if He responds negatively to us.

This issue-devotion should be taken as the guiding path for how our devotion to God should be. In issue-devotion, we see the essence of true devotion, which is theoretical devotion, and practical devotion involving service and sacrifice, without the aspiration of any fruit in return. In real life, when parents scold their ungrateful children for their bad behavior, it shows that the parents have lost theoretical devotion for their children. But in the case of God, we must be very careful about maintaining the purity of even our theoretical devotion along with the practical devotion.

We must remember that God is not in need of our service or sacrifice and that the practical devotion is only the proof of our theoretical devotion. There is another important point to note in the context of freedom from the aspiration for worldly fruits. Worldly fruits mean not only the fruits that are to be enjoyed in this world but also the fruits that are to be enjoyed in the upper worlds. The aspiration to escape from the punishments of our sins in hell and the aspiration to enjoy in heaven without doing good deeds here are also to be avoided.

In this second line of treatment for curing the worldly ambitions, it is clear that our good fruits get exhausted and the bad fruits grow more and more with increasing interest. The soul only goes deeper and deeper into difficulty and there seems to be no escape for the soul. How can it be called a treatment then? Actually, no matter how much the pending punishments grow with interest, one need not fear. In the wonderful administration of the kindest Lord, an escape and a chance for reformation is ever-present.

The golden path of the propagation of God’s spiritual knowledge can be adopted by any soul at any time. The work of propagation enables the soul to learn the knowledge deeply and get the grace of God. As the soul learns and propagates God’s spiritual knowledge, his misconceptions are eliminated. He realizes and repents for his sins. When he finally does not repeat the sins practically, he is said to have reformed. Upon getting permanently reformed, all his pending punishments are canceled by God since the punishments were only meant for reformation and not for revenge. However, the soul must choose to follow this path of reformation through spiritual learning and propagation.

The souls whose worldly ambitions are not cured even by the second line of treatment are thrown into the life cycles of animals, birds, worms and so on. This is not at all done for revenge but in fact, God is only fulfilling the soul’s desire. When the soul is simply attached to his worldly goals and refuses to rise above them, in spite of several efforts made by God, God finally gives the soul a congenial living atmosphere. In the animal births, the soul is driven only by materialistic goals like eating, drinking, and sex, which is exactly what these souls pursued in their lives as humans (sāmānyametat paśubhirnarāṇām). If apart from the strong desire for these worldly goals if the soul also has a lot of ego, it is thrown into the births of devils and demons (kṣipāmyajasramaśubhān āsurīśvaiva yoniṣu—Gita).

The important point is to delink our worldly ambitions from God and live like an atheist in the single aspect of taking worldly efforts to get worldly fruits. Of course, we should follow the atheist only in this single aspect and not follow him in the aspect of disbelieving the existence of God. The lack of belief in God drives the atheist to fulfill his excessive worldly ambitions even by sinful means, whereas the theist’s belief and devotion to God controls his ambition and prevents him from committing sins.

Mere belief and confidence in God does not bring any result. The belief must also be associated with theoretical and practical devotion to God. If you simply have faith and confidence in the prime minister, you will not be favored by him. You must come in contact with him as a real and sincere worker of his party. Then alone will he be pleased with you and favor you.

The work will never exist without its related desire. Desire is the cause and work is its effect. There can be desire without work as in the case of impossibility to do a work. But, once, work is seen, its concerned desire must exist. Gold is the cause and ornament is its effect. There can be raw lump of gold without ornament. But, there cannot be ornament without gold. Therefore, there cannot be work without its related desire. In the above example of doing the work for the sake of others, it is also based on the desire only. The Lord does the work with a desire to help His children, the human beings (Aham beejapradah pitaa… Gita).

The Lord does not have any other desire (Lord). Therefore, the Lord is confined to the worldly work (Pravrutti) only since Nivrutti (work of God) cannot exist in His case. God created this entire universe and the cause for such work of creation is said to be the desire for entertainment (Ekaki… Veda). Therefore, the work of this entire creation is also based on its related desire, which is the entertainment. A human being doing the work to make his children active, cannot be claimed as the work done without selfish motive. The work done for the sake of him alone need not be treated as selfish. The work done for the sake of him can be treated as more concentrated selfishness and the work done for the sake of his children can be treated as the work done with lesser selfishness. Here, the difference between God and the human being can be recognized.

God need not do any work for the sake of Him since there is nothing that is not achieved by Him (Nanavaptam… Gita). But, in the case of human being, it always needs something to be achieved. Due to this difference, in the case of God, the highest selfishness is absent. Only the lesser selfishness exists and hence, the second type of work alone can be seen in His case. In the case of human being, only few human beings are its children. Therefore, there is difference between his children and outsiders. When the human being does some work for the sake of outsiders, such work can be treated as the work with least selfishness. In the case of God, the least selfishness becomes absent since all the human beings are His children only.

When the human being does some work for the sake of outsiders, such work cannot be treated as the work done without selfishness because the human being loves more its co-human beings than the other living beings. If the human being does some work for the sake of all living beings, even then, such work cannot be treated as the work without selfishness. The reason is that all the living beings are in one phase only, called as the creation. The basic attachment existing in the common phase is the basic selfishness. The other phase is only the creator or God. Therefore, the work done for the sake of God alone is the work without any selfishness. Since God does not have another God, the only left over different phase for God is the creation. Therefore, the work done by God for the sake of a different phase, called creation, can be justified as the work without any selfishness. Therefore, the selfishness attributed to God on His work for the sake of His children gets nullified. In the case of a human being doing work for the sake of other human beings, such nullification is not possible since all the human beings are related in one phase only, which is called as the creation.

The Lord created this universe mainly for His entertainment. If the Lord does not guide the human beings existing in the creation in a proper direction, the human beings may get destroyed (Utsedeyurime… Gita) and this subsequently may destroy the basic aim of the entertainment. In the case of the human being, there is no such secondary basic reason, which is other than the blind selfishness. Even in the case of the service to outsiders, most of the people do such work only for fame. Politicians cash even such fame for the sake of getting victory in the elections. There may be some good people, who do the service for outsiders without such selfish benefit. Even for such people, heaven is announced as reward, which is a temporary fruit. The reason is that such work does not cross the boundary of the single phase, which is the creation. If the service crosses the boundaries of the single phase and gets extended to the other phase, the God, the permanent fruit is awarded. You may say that such service is impossible, since, the other phase can never be served, which is the unimaginable God.

The service exists only between two imaginable media. This objection is ruled out since the unimaginable God comes as God in imaginable medium, called as the contemporary human incarnation. The service done to contemporary human form alone can be received by God directly and also God can give the right knowledge resulting in the right direction. The service done to inert statues and photos, which also exhibit the human forms only, is good for the beginners to develop the training to do service through sacrifice. The training does not give any fruit since the service is not received by God directly. The statues existing in human form indicate that you should catch the human form of God only. You should do the service for deserving only. The main criterion for the deservingness of service is that your service should be received by the receiver. When the service is not received by the receiver, the waste service done by you is based on the blind ignorant sacrifice only and it can be treated useful in the sense that it develops the attitude of sacrifice in general in the phase of initial training.

Your food habits

The Veda says that you should not take food more than twice in 24 hours. If you take food more than twice, you should work like the animal ( dvirahnaah manushyaah trirahnaah pashavah… Veda). But, you are taking the food three times and not working like the bull in agriculture. Due to this, the sugar levels rise in the blood leading to several calamities of the health. When you become rich, you like to eat oily foods and sweets, which are fast vehicles to death. Poverty controls all the desires and gives best health and best happiness in the life.

Hence, Shankara told that the poor man is the most fortunate fellow ( Kaupeenavantah khalu bhagyavantah ). If you realize this wonderful truth, your ambition to become more and more rich even through corruption and crime disappears. Such realization comes only through spiritual knowledge and not through the study of science and management of business administration. Hence, the education system must be thoroughly rejuvenated to fill more with spiritual knowledge and less with materialistic line of learning . If this is done by the Government, there need not be any effort to bring balance in the society with peace and happiness in the humanity.

You must eat to live and not live to eat! The food must be in limited quantity. If the food is eaten in limited quantity, it is eaten by you (adyate) and if it is eaten more, you will be eaten by it (atti) since it (unlimited food) brings illness to kill you! This is said by the Veda ( adyate atticha bhutaani tasmaat annam ). Only little food is converted into energy. All the rest remaining food brings disease only. More food is eaten due to ambition for self only. Limited food is converted into limited energy. Since the energy is limited, you should not waste your energy in luxuries and in killing the time by useless entertainments. The digestive system is not a machine generating endless energy since the system has limits of work and efficiency.

You may be very rich to procure unlimited quantity of food, but, your digestive system has limit in its work-efficiency. Hence, whether you are rich or poor, you have to take care about eating limited food and preserving the limited energy generated. This limited energy should be carefully and precisely used in worldly activities so that as far as possible more and more energy can be available for divine service. Full meal gives sleep. It means that sleep is indicating the full meal. Exactly half of this full meal should be taken so that half vacant stomach is partly filled with water and partly filled with moving gas.

The food must be suitable to your body ( hitam ), limited ( mitam ) and just cooked ( hutam ), which alone gives perfect health ( hitabhuk mitabhuk hutabhuk ). You must rest a little after lunch and walk a little after dinner in the night ( katipaya padachamkramanah ). You must never resist urine and motion for a long time ( anibaddha mutra pureeshah ). You must have little frequency of sex as far as possible ( streeshu yo jaagarti ). All these are tips of health science given by yoga scripture. Health is the real wealth not only in Pravrutti (social justice) but also in Nivrutti (serving God).

Extreme steps must be avoided as per authority also.

[Both extreme steps of fasting and overeating to pain the soul shall be avoided as said in the Gita ( naatyashnatastu… , karshayantah… ). Fasting gives weakness in doing ritual and overeating brings drowsiness. Even the Veda recommends light food in rituals ( payo braahmanasya... ).]

The food must be in three ways, devoid of three defects and first of three qualities.

[Precautions must be taken in taking food: 1) It must be limited in quantity, but, high in quality. 2) It must be well cooked to eliminate bacteria and 3) It must be non-allergic to be known by test of a specific human being ( mitam hutam hitam ). The food must avoid three defects also: 1) Gas (vaata), 2) Damage of liver (pitta) and 3) effect of cold (sleshma). The food must be selected for the first quality and the other two qualities must be limited: 1) Sattvam with neutral taste, 2) Rajas with salty, chilly and sour tastes and 3) Tamas with killed taste due to long delay after cooking.]

Deep sleep must be 1/3 or 1/4 of the day without the three types of dreams.

[Sleep must not be lesser then 1/4 and must not be more then 1/3 of the duration of a day (24 hours). This sleep must be deep devoid of any dream. Dream comes for three reasons: 1) God may use it for communication with the soul. 2) The strong feelings of subconscious state of previous births may appear and 3) Some strong feelings from general conscious state of awakening of present birth may appear.]

Gas generated from potato etc., cold generated from sweet and cool foods, indigestion coming from oil etc., spoil the health. You must stop the journey in rainy season since you will be attacked by illness. The secret of Chaaturmaasya (staying in one place during rainy season) is only this. You must have proper quantum of sleep to keep mind fresh and body also healthy. You must adapt yourself carefully according to changing seasons.

Association with worldly people is not holy. Association with spiritual people makes you holy. Don’t aspire to become popular in this society of worldly people. This is the reason for the sages to go to forests to live in association with birds and animals, who do effort for the meals of that day only. The worldly people in cities and villages always put efforts even if they have earned wealth sufficient for 10 future generations! Take even simple food offered by spiritual people and don’t take even a feast offered by worldly people. You have to spend 1/3rd time of day (24 hrs) for sleep. Sleep is very essential for the brain and body. In the rest 2/3rd time (16 hrs), spend as much as possible for the sake of God after finishing your duties for earning and other responsibilities of your family.

Rest a while after lunch and walk a while after dinner. The food taken should be 1/4th of your stomach. Water should be in another 1/4th part. Another 1/4th part should be for the movement of gas. The last 1/4th part should be free space. The scripture of Yoga prescribes this. Control of external and internal senses is the very foundation of Yoga. Doing regular exercises and avoiding polluted air by exposing to fresh and pure air are the associated steps for good health. You must take lot of care about your health, which is very much essential for the spiritual journey.

You must always analyse food you take regarding its effects on your body. The food also affects your mind and intelligence. Food is the source of good health as well as disease. The qualities of food and its quantity should be always analysed. You take food through your mouth and similarly you hear the sentences through your ears. You must analyse the quality and quantity of speech grasped by your years. Both these decide your spiritual future.

The effects of food on the body and mind

We are talking about the force used by God to influence the thoughts, words, and deeds of souls in the Kṛta Age (initial ages) on earth. Earth is called Martya Loka which is a karma loka. It means that it is a world in which souls choose their own actions. It is only in this world that above-mentioned little freedom is possible. The upper worlds are called bhoga lokas in which the soul is destined to enjoy the fruits of its actions without the slightest freedom to alter the fruit. Hence, we need not touch the upper worlds in which there is not the slightest possibility of getting even a trace of freedom. In this karma loka or earth, during the Kṛta Age, all human beings ate only the prescribed food, which helps the soul in thinking, speaking and doing good alone.

The state of the soul was like that of a hospitalized patient, who has the restriction of eating only the prescribed food. Food is said to influence the physical state of the body as well as the thoughts and the state of the mind (Annānurūpāṁ tanurūpabuddhiṁ, Kāryam nidānāddhi guṇānadhīte). Today, after getting freedom from God, human beings can eat any type of food. They can speak and do anything they want. If required, they can even do things that they want secretly! But the scriptures, the preachers and finally the Human Incarnations always exist in every generation to give souls all the information with full clarity about merit and sin. The ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it!

Freedom can be enjoyed while simultaneously taking the necessary precautions of avoiding sin. The freedom allows you to do any type of meritorious action. Within the boundaries of meritorious action, there is a great variety of actions that one can do. Meritorious actions are like sweet, mild and good food which is called sāttvika āhāra. One has the freedom to choose any such good food for good physical and mental health. Hot and spicy dishes are like sins. You must take precautions to avoid all types of hot and spicy dishes in order to maintain good health. There are actually several saints who eat only sweet and mild food in limited quantities. They totally avoid hot and spicy dishes.

The majority, like us, chooses to eat some spicy dishes too since God has given us the freedom of choice. Would you not criticize God if He had not given this freedom to us? Further, you may avoid sin and do only meritorious deeds. But if you do the meritorious deeds with the aspiration for heavenly enjoyment, here is a warning for you. It is like eating sweets which causes diabetes. Avoiding sins and doing meritorious deeds must be associated with true devotion to God. The devotion is like preventive medicine. It prevents the disease.

The type of food we consume affects our mind. The qualities inherent in the food we eat produce corresponding qualities in our minds, which force our decision-making. But we must clearly note that it is we who are responsible for these forces acting on our mind arising from the qualities in the foods consumed by us. After all, we use our freedom to choose what we eat. God has given us intelligence and has also described the effects of different types of foods in the scripture such as the last chapter of the Gita. We had the freedom to choose any type of good food. Yet we also chose some food that is not good. Thus, we see that within certain limits, we have full freedom.

We can similarly analyze the association with good and bad people. We have the freedom to associate with bad people just as we can choose bad food. But we can also use our intelligence and follow the divine instructions given by God. With right analysis, we can select the company of good people which is like good food. Among good people, we have full freedom to select any type of good people. In the Kṛta Age, souls only had the freedom to choose any type of good company. They had no freedom to choose bad company. Later on, God even granted the freedom to choose bad company. Some souls used that freedom, chose bad company and got spoiled. For that one cannot blame God because He always preaches to us all about good and bad without any partiality.

You must not kill any living being for the sake of your food. ()

The killing is the greatest sin ()

You must not kill any living being for the sake of your food. God has given enough vegetable food that contains all the ingredients present in the non-vegetarian food. After all, the source of ingredients of any flesh is only vegetable kingdom only. Eating the non-vegetarian food is not a sin because same ingredients exist in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods. But, you have to kill a living being for the sake of non-vegetarian food. The killing is the greatest sin.

You may argue that you have not killed the living being directly. Such argument cannot stand. Since you are eating the non-vegetarian food, the living being is killed. You are responsible for its killing. Therefore, you are the principle shareholder of the sin. There is nothing wrong if you eat a living being after its natural death. In Hinduism, there is a sect of people called ‘Kapalikas’, who eat the dead living beings. Therefore, they do not acquire sin. The tsunami is always due to anger of God since you are killing the living beings present in water for food. The earthquakes are due to killing of living beings that exist on the earth. God in the form of Buddha and Mahavir preached the non-violence and severely opposed the killing of living beings.

God in some other human forms might have followed the practice of non-vegetarian food in order to join with non-vegetarian people so that, certain other higher aspects to be preached might have been taken into consideration. That does not mean that God has encouraged the killing of living beings through non-vegetarian food. He might have kept silent on this issue in order to give importance to other serious issues. God follows the ignorance of the students in order to become friendly with them. To control a running bull, you have to run along with it for some distance before controlling it.

All these are the basic concepts of nivrutti, which are the core of pravrutti. By following the ethics of pravrutti, you will avoid God becoming furious with you. Then, through nivrutti, you can please God. On one hand, you are making God furious by not following the ethics of pravrutti and how can you please God through nivrutti simultaneously?

NEVER KILL ANIMALS! IT IS A GRAVE SIN

My dear disciple! Listen Me. Non-violence is the roof of the justice. The animal nature shall be killed and not the animal! If you succeed in pravrutti, God will drag you in Nivrutti also.

[The greatest sin is violence (ahimsaaparamodharmah), which means hurting or killing any good living being. People have misunderstood that animals are to be killed in sacrifice done for God. The Veda says that the animal to be killed is the rigid ignorance and stupidity of the animal-nature and not the actual animal itself (manyuhpashuh - Veda)! The word ‘ajaa’ means goat as well as food grains stored for three years (so that they are not useful for germination) from which the flour is prepared and a paste of it is used to prepare the statue of the animal. Such statue of animal is to be cut as a symbolic act. Without understanding the latter intended sense, people have started killing the goats in sacrifice!

Any animal including cow or bird of soft nature should not be killed for the sake of food. Scripture says that a Brahmin should not be killed, but, Ravana (Brahmin) was killed by God. Brahmin means any living being (including human being) that does not harm you even if you harm it (ghaatamnaghaatayetviprah). The deity of justice surrendered to God Datta in the form of a cow. Cow slaughter means slaughter of justice. If justice is slaughtered, the cow is slaughtered and not reverse. Any soft-natured animal including cow or bird or human being should not be slaughtered. Slaughter of justice is the whole and slaughter of Cow is a part of it. This is the essence of the climax of justice. If you are not doing the three sins mentioned in the Gita, God will be very much pleased with you and pushes you in the path of Nivrutti also to make you His nearest and dearest!]

Avoid unnecessary expenditure of money and energy also

We should use electricity with utmost care only whenever we have a real necessity. People leave the lights and fans ON even after they leave the rooms. They try to show off their false generosity and richness; that they can pay the electricity charges even for the electricity that they do not need. Yes, I agree that you are very rich and have the capacity to pay the electricity bill even though it was spent unnecessarily. It is not the question of your capacity to pay the extra electricity charges. Electrical energy is generated only in a limited quantity; not in an unlimited quantity. If it were generated in an unlimited quantity, your wastage of electricity need not be criticized. Everybody is wasting some amount of electricity. If all these small quantities of electricity are conserved and the wastage is reduced to zero, a lot of electricity will be saved.

This large amount of electricity saved would be useful for poor farmers who need electricity for pumping water from their borewells and irrigating their fields. This will allow plenty of food to be produced, which in turn would prevent the hunger deaths taking place on the streets. The saved energy could also be used for other real necessities like industries, which give employment to the poor. Unless we are concerned about the wastage of energy which is generated in limited quantities, we are not helping this world function peacefully. The peaceful functioning of the world is the main aim of God.

Similarly, human energy is also very much limited. You may have a lot of food in your home since you are very rich. But can you continuously eat food and continuously generate human energy? Are you like an engine, which can continuously generate energy by continuously consuming fuel? Actually, even an engine, if operated continuously, will lose its efficiency and get spoiled in a very short time. Our digestive system is even more delicate. It does not even allow food to be eaten continuously, not to mention producing human energy continuously. It can only take in a little quantity of food twice or thrice in a day and it can generate a very limited amount of human energy. If we waste our human energy in unnecessary worldly issues, no energy is left for our spiritual efforts.

We must control the wastage of human energy in unnecessary worldly vices. A small part of the little amount of available human energy should be used for fulfilling the bare worldly necessities. The rest of the available human energy should be used for our spiritual efforts. Unless we develop the habit of controlling the wastage of external energy, how can we save our external physical energy and use it for useful worldly tasks? Unless we develop the habit of controlling the wastage of our internal human energy, how can we save the internal human energy and use it for the spiritual effort?

Conservation of energy, time and money, without wasting them on unnecessary expenditure is not miserliness. It is real wisdom to conserve them so that they may be used for the right purposes. If one conserves these three and does not use them even for the right purposes, such a person is a real miser. Controlling the unnecessary expenditure of these three is not miserliness at all. You are conserving them by resisting their wastage so that they can be spent in full quantity for the right purpose and that the need is perfectly and effectively met. Generally, we waste energy, time and money thinking that we are spending them in very very small quantities. But thinking like this we waste them in small quantities many many times. If only we could put all these small wasted amounts together and see the full extent of the wastage!

We should withdraw our senses from these worldly vices to save our energy, time and money, remembering that drops of water put together formed the mighty ocean. Such withdrawal of senses from the unnecessary wastage of these three is called as pratyāhāra, which is the fifth step of yoga. This step is the main gate of the real spiritual effort, which is represented by the next three steps called as dhāraṇā, dhyāna and sāmādhi. Unless the leakages in the water-tank are arrested, the pipelines running from the water-tank cannot yield water at a sufficient pressure to fulfill your needs. The first four steps of yoga are: yama, niyama, āsana and prāṇāyāma. They are related to conserving one’s physical health. Physical health is also the basis of mental health. So, these four steps ensure that you attain a sound mind in a sound body. Only after attaining this preliminary requirement, does the actual path of yoga start with the fifth step called as pratyāhāra.

In this fifth step, you have to withdraw the senses from the false attractions of the world so that you can put in the initial effort with force and enter into the subject of God (spiritual knowledge). After digesting the subject of God, there is no necessity of any effort for the detachment from the unnecessary worldly issues. The attachment to God naturally brings detachment from the world. But before attaining that attachment to God, you have to put in special effort for worldly detachment. This is just an initial starting trouble. For this initial effort, we need the help of this fifth step of yoga. Unless you have a sound body with a sound mind along with the achieved interest in God, you cannot serve God effectively like Hanumān, who has a strong body and a strong mind with a strong attachment to God.
