I remember The Rockford files starring James Garner in my early teens. Although I wasn't a very big fan of the show, I never had an issue with his character, although my brother said all he ever did was joke and get beat up. Really, this sounded like something my father would say, and I thought my brother was just following his lead. Actually, until a couple of years ago, I thought Garner had already passed back in the 80's.

The reason I'm writing this post is because of the time I read of his passing yesterday. As you know, The Rockford files still play repeats, especially on OTA television. I was in my screen-room watching an episode yesterday afternoon, and there was a scene where he was being booked by these two black cops. As usual, he was being treated a little rough. While he was being escorted into the squad car, he made the remark to the black officers, "Pretty god job, but John Wayne would have kept his back to the sun". I was shocked and offended, and I was surprised the tv network even aired that segment. I didn't remember Garner cracking any racial jokes on that series. Like I said, I was a kid and I probably missed it. That, or they just now decided to air that part. Maybe my father or brother saw that episode years ago, giving them reason not to like his character. Anyway, I got so offended that I immediately turned the channel. I may have even turned the tv off, I can't remember.

Not long after this, I came in the house and got on the CNN website and read that James Garner had passed away. I never experienced any like that before, but I did experience something similar last month, which I will discuss in my next thread.

By the way, I try not to speak of negative things when someone passes, but this had something to do with racial insensitivity, and I found this timing a little unusual.

That wasn't my point. It was also the racism. I kind of thought James Garners' "Rockford files" character was cool. I was a little sadden when I thought I heard he died in the 80's. But to suddenly hear that racial anti-black comment he made to them black cops, after thinking his character was cool all those years, then finding out he was dead less 1o minutes later, didn't feel that normal to me, and it shouldn't to anybody. That's sorta self- explanatory.

And it wouldn't have mattered if he was 106.

its a freaky coincidence i guess but just that a coincidence - far as Garner goes - seen that show a few times and it seemed OK - im guessing the words the guy said were written by someone other than him though - and how olds that series - like the 60s or something???? i mean it sounds real bad now but back then i bet youd have heard way way worse on tv - not sayin its not a racist joke or nothing just not as overt as some of the comments ive heard in more recent times - i dare say even that back then showing two black guys as cops might even have been seen as kinda progressive

To be honest, they had more respect for us in the 60's and 70's. Actually the show aired in 74. Although someone else wrote that script, it didn't mean he had to accept it, especially an actor with his stature. Garner died an old man looking nothing like he did in that series. I was more amazed at the time I saw the episode, and the time I learned of his death. I'm not saying this had something to do with his death or not, but the message to me was that God clearly don't like racism, and we should not drop the ball, like I see so many blacks do.

There was this tv station Channel 26, which was a tv station in the DMV that wasn't a cable channel, but a local channel known for elementary students when I was a kid. I'm not sure what kind of channel it is now, but sometimes they show plays and documentaries. But it's still not a coast to coast cable channel.

Not too long after 9-11, one night on channel 26 they were showing this stand-up comedy program, which was rare, and it stayed on for a couple of hours. I'm not sure if you know of Robin Williams, but he was known for playing good guy roles since he got his big start with the corny 70's comedy sitcom "Mork and Mindy". Well, he was on this comedy program that night, along with Whoppie Golberg, and some other white comedian-actor...I forgot who he was. Anyway, the two were telling all these racist jokes that was so dirty, they should have never been on regular tv, or told during our generation period. It was like they went back into the 30's. There was this particular comedy stunt they were doing about the black mans penis. They may have been wearing blackfaces, I can't remember. But the stunt went like this: The three of them were hugged shoulder to shoulder side by side, doing that dance when they all kick one leg out at the same time, then point the other direction and kick the other leg out at the same time. Then while they were talking about the black mans penis, Robin Williams got behind the other white guy, and started kicking his one leg between the guys two legs, symbolizing a black man with a large penis. This was just one of the racist jokes. I thought to myself that since 9-11 just happened, Hollywood was just going for broke. It was like watching popular actor-comedians act as though they weren't going to be alive in the next year or two...giving them the chance to show how they really felt about black people. Anyway, I couldn't believe this was Robin Williams, and it was a disgrace watching Whoopie teaming up with them, however no surprise, since she was already labeled an Aunt Jemima for dealing with Ted Dancer who recently wore a black face.

I haven't heard much from Robin Williams since. I think that other actor was Billy Crystal...which was another shocker. I haven't heard very much from him either since that disgusting performance.

That so-called comedy program that night taught me to never be surprised at who did or does what in Hollywood, and how racist some of them could be underneath all that.
