Could Dollar General Lose Out on Family Dollar?

Family Dollar Stores Inc. (NYSE: FDO) is nearing the end of its hunt for a merger partner, and prospects are looking brighter for Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), while Dollar General Corp. (NYSE: DG) seems to be slipping to the wayside. A recent analyst call shed more light on what the future holds for these dollar giants.

Currently, Dollar Tree is the front-runner to takeover Family Dollar. However, the Family Dollar shareholders ultimately will decide the fate of this transaction on January 22. It is worth noting that shareholders also voted by a large margin in December’s voting session to reexamine Dollar General’s offer.

In wake of Family Dollar defeat, Dollar General CEO announces new retirement date

Rick Dreiling is chairman and CEO of Dollar General.

Rick Dreiling, CEO of Goodlettsville-based Dollar General, once intended to retire in late May, but paused those plans as his company pursued a hostile takeover of North Carolina-based Family Dollar.

Thursday, however, Family Dollar's shareholders voted for a competing offer from Dollar Tree, and Dreiling all but admitted defeat.

Family Dollar Investors Approve Dollar Tree Deal: What Happens Now?

In the end it wasn't even close. Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO ) shareholders overwhelmingly voted in favor of the $8.5 billion takeover offer made by smaller rival Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR ) , bringing to a close a high-stakes drama that played out over several months.

Left behind is the largest deep-discounting chain Dollar General (NYSE: DG ) , which, although it offered half a billion dollars more to buy Family Dollar than Dollar Tree did, could never overcome the belief that it would have to close far more stores to satisfy regulatory antitrust concerns than it would publicly admit.

Dollar store products have an unsafe amount of toxic chemicals, report says

Dollar store products may be cheap, plentiful and popular, but many contain unsafe levels of toxic chemicals, a new study has found.

The Campaign for Healthier Solutionstested 164 dollar store products, including some from Louisville, and found high levels of chemicals such as polyvinyl chloride, phthalates, lead and tin in 81 percent of them, WFPL-FM reports.

Don’t buy these 7 things at a dollar store

Dollar stores can be great places to pick up inexpensive items, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Rather than ending up with a bargain, you could end up with junk or, even worse, something dangerous.

    1. Electric cords and other electric devices

... dollar stores don’t have a great track record of quality control when it comes to cords and electronics. As far back as 1999, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned about faulty power strips, extension cords and surge protectors being sold at discount stores. More recent warnings have highlighted faulty extension cords, holiday minilights and portable heaters ...

... Often having fewer fibers than other brands, using no-name paper can make for a less than ideal outcome. We won’t elaborate.

As for the brand-name toilet paper, tissues and paper towels at dollar stores, you may find the same problem we discovered with shampoo ...

Do You Shop At America’s Favorite Dollar Store?

... It wasn't exactly a bait-and-switch scenario when Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR ) said it might have to close more stores than it previously estimated to satisfy antitrust concerns with its acquisition of Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO ) . However, after the two deep discount chains had used a very low number of store closures to help sell the merger last month, some investors might still be annoyed by the new, higher figure. And with potential changes affecting consumers, customers at America's favorite dollar store might wind up annoyed, too ...

The Dollar Store Wars Are Over. What’s Next for the People Who Sell Us Cheap Canned Goods?

The summer and fall of 2014 were the seasons of dollar drama. First, Dollar Treesaid it was buying its bigger but less profitable competitor, Family Dollar, for about $8.5 billion. Then, Dollar General, the biggest of the ultra-cheap U.S. chains upped that bid with an $8.9 billion offer. But Family Dollar just wasn’t into Dollar General that way and rebuffed it twice. So Dollar General went hostile and took a new $9.1 billion offer directly to Family Dollar’s shareholders ...
